Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, this congressionally funded program is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, TX.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.  Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

For over 50 years, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) has helped administer the Fulbright Scholar Program, the U.S. government's flagship academic exchange effort, on behalf of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Founded in 1947, CIES is a private organization. It is a division of the Institute of International Education (IIE).

CIES maintains deep ties with the U.S. higher education community, including individual universities and colleges and major scholarly organizations. It also works with a network of binational Fulbright Commissions in 50 countries and 90 U.S. diplomatic posts around the world, as well as international universities and higher education associations.

Hostelling International USA's Explore the World Travel Scholarship program is eligible to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have a demonstrated financial need.

The program is called Explore the World, and it’s administered by the nonprofit organization, Hostelling International USA (HI USA). HI USA is committed to creating a more tolerant world, and these scholarships are for young travelers inspired to make the world a better place, but lack the financial means to go abroad.
The scholarship is open to individuals, ages 18-30, who will engage in an educational or service learning component during their trip. Freeman-ASIA is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Awards range from $3,000 per student for summer study and $5,000 per semester, to a maximum of $7,000 for a full year abroad.

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for US undergraduates to participate in study abroad opportunities. The scholarships are designed to provide access to students who may otherwise study abroad, with a special emphasis on students from underrepresented groups.

As part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages, the Department of State Critical Language Scholarships will provide funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers.

Recipients of these scholarships will be expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers.

The UAS7 Consortium is an exchange partner with LSU New Orleans, giving LSU New Orleans students the ability to study at any of the seven member institutions in Germany.

The UAS Study and Internship Program (SIP) has enabled highly qualified undergraduates from U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities to experience the German approach to hands-on education at a member of UAS7, a consortium of Germany's top universities of applied sciences. SIP students spend a semester studying at a UAS7 campus and a semester interning.

Starting in 2013, our offerings will be expanded to include the Internship Program (IS) and Study Program (SP). IP students will intern at laboratories at UAS7 members over a period of 2-6 months. SP students will study for a semester at a UAS7 member.

Successful applicants are eligible for a UAS7 Travel Scholarship (1000€) for transatlantic travel expenses.

The Pickering Fellowships help highly motivated and academically excellent college juniors and graduating seniors or college graduates who want to pursue a Foreign service career in the U.S. Department of State.

The goal of the programs is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic and social backgrounds who are dedicated to representing America's interests abroad. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply to one of the two programs. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, which administers the Pickering Fellowships, identifies and develops leaders and institutions to meet the nation's most critical challenges.

Program Awards:

• $40,000 annually for academic expenses covering the last year of undergrad or first year of grad study (for Undergraduate Fellowship); or the first and second year of grad study (Graduate Fellowship)
• Two paid State Department summer internships (domestic and abroad)
• Professional development through workshops and informational seminars
• Mentoring by U.S. Foreign Service Officers 

Eligibility: Undergraduate applicants must be college junior or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 3.2. Graduate applicants must be entering a two-year terminal master's degree program in the fall of the Fellowship year. All applicants must have U.S. citizenship.

INSIGHT Into Diversity is committed to improving educational equity for all students, but especially those from underrepresented backgrounds who may not traditionally be afforded the ability or opportunity to participate in a study abroad program. To assist in this effort, they are awarding a $2,000 scholarship to five individual students currently enrolled in a baccalaureate-granting institution, graduate school, or health profession school. Their charitable concern is to provide scholarships to women of color who need financial assistance to study abroad. Scholarships provide deserving students the ability to achieve success at their study abroad program.

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation funds scholarships administered through AATJ to help students study abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Semester scholarship grantees are awarded a $2,500 stipend; academic-year grantees are awarded $4,500. Applications open twice a year, generally in mid-spring and mid-fall. The Foundation awards approximately 100 scholarships annually at a total value of $350,000.

Applications are handled by the Bridging Clearinghouse at the American Association of Teachers of Japanese.
