LSU New Orleans’ Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology (CHART) has received a $10,311 award to support the City of Covington, Louisiana, in preparing for an upcoming verification visit through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS).
Led by Principal Investigator Monica Teets Farris, the project will provide technical assistance to the city ahead of its scheduled CRS verification visit in November. The effort will focus on reviewing, organizing and documenting activities that may qualify for credit under the CRS program.
The CRS is a voluntary FEMA program that recognizes communities taking steps to reduce flood risk and improve floodplain management. Participating communities can earn credit for activities that go beyond minimum floodplain management requirements, potentially helping residents qualify for discounts on flood insurance premiums.
As part of the project, CHART will work with the City of Covington to review eligible CRS activities that fall into four categories: public information, mapping and regulations, flood damage reduction and warning and response.
CHART will help the city assess its existing efforts and document activities that demonstrate its commitment to flood risk reduction and community preparedness.
The project reflects LSU New Orleans’ commitment to applying its expertise to real-world challenges facing Louisiana communities. Through its work with Covington, CHART will support local efforts to strengthen flood preparedness, improve documentation of mitigation activities and promote community resilience.
