FAQs

  • How do I apply?
    • Apply for the program online.
    • Upload your photo and fill out the medical history form as directed by the instructions on the page linked above.
    • As soon as we receive all completed forms we will contact you regarding your status.
  • After I have a space on the program, what happens next?
    • You will receive more information in an e-mail.
    • We will continue to communicate with you about upcoming deadlines as we go along.
    • Apply soon, as space is limited!
  • When should I apply for a Passport?

Immediately! This is sometimes the most time-consuming aspect of travel preparation. You can have your passport issued at a major post office or check with the passport office to make your appointment.
    travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
You will also need to give us a copy of the inside (photo page) of your passport for our records.

  • What do I pack for the trip?

A complete list is in the Student Guide that all registered students will receive.  Do not bring too much! We know from experience that it is better to travel light. When in doubt leave it out!  If you plan on bringing back gifts and goodies for your family you will need room in your suitcase on the return trip. Remember it is only a few weeks in Ireland; you do not need 10 pairs of shoes or 6 pairs of blue jeans. Here's a handy list.

  • Do I need to bring my own sheets/towels/pillows? How will I wash linen/clothing?
    1. Bed linens and towels will be provided.
    2. Pillows are provided, but bring your own if you are particular about your pillow.
    3. There are washing machines and dryers in the facility. Students will wash their own clothes.
  • How do I choose and enroll for classes?

When you apply, you select from a list of classes listed on the form. You will select one for each section you desire, up to three sections. You will also need to select an alternate class for each section. It is up to the student to talk to his or her university and counselor to make sure the credits can be transferred for a specific class.  Please note that 5000- and 6000-level course numbers are graduate sections, whereas 2000- and 4000-level are undergraduate sections. Non-LSU New Orleans students may request the approval of their home institution to study abroad by completing Home Institutional Approval form.

  • What about electricity?

Electrical outlets in Ireland are 230V. You will need to bring plug adapters (not converters) for any electrical appliances such as laptop computers, camera chargers, etc. you wish to bring. For Ireland the associated plug type is G, which is the plug that has three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern. Ireland operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. Also, check the label on your appliance to make sure it can handle the current. Some will have a switch, and on some the label will indicate a range of allowable voltage (100-240V., for example). If the appliance is rated only for 110V, the current in Cork will probably ruin it EVEN IF YOU HAVE A VOLTAGE CONVERTER. Voltage converters are unreliable, very heavy, and not worth the expense. It is usually easier, safer and less expensive to buy small appliances like hair dryers in Cork than to buy a voltage converter to try to make your American appliance work – especially devices that involve heating (hair dryers, curling irons, etc. WILL NOT WORK in CORK)

  • How much money do I bring?

We recommend about $200 - $300 a week depending on the exchange rate. This should cover evening meals and weekend travel expenses. This is only an estimate. You will have to decide on how much you will need!

  • What day should I arrive?

The arrival day is June 16, 2020, so most students should plan to arrive then. Once you book your travel, you should send us a copy of your itinerary. You plan to leave the U.S. on the 15th. The next day is the on-site orientation, campus & city tours, and welcome party. This is a day packed with important information that no one should miss.

  • When do I pay for the program?

Once your initial deposit is received, you will be sent an e-mail reminder for the remainder of the payments. It is your responsibility to keep up with the schedule of payments. It is imperative that you keep up with the schedule of payments or you may be placed on a waiting list! The payment schedule is listed on our website, and on the front of this form. If you are pending financial aid, please let our office know so we can note this in your file.

You can make online payments by following via the secure link.

  • If I'm not a LSU New Orleans student, how do I get my grades to my school back home?

If you are not a LSU New Orleans student, grades will be automatically sent to your university in the weeks following the completion of the summer school. Please note that we can not send out official transcripts until we receive the room damage report from the dormitory. All students will receive an official certificate upon completion of the program.  All students grades will be sent to their university - NO EXCEPTIONS. If you have any questions regarding the transcript process please contact our office.

  • What about books and assignments for my classes?

Prior to your departure for the program, you will receive a list of books to order, syllabi, and instructions for any assignments or readings that need to be completed prior to arrival. You may purchase the books from your local bookstore or order online.

  • What if the class I chose does not “make it”?

Because of the limited size of our program, not all classes will have enough students to make. It’s important to choose your course early in order to give that particular class the best chance of making. If your class is not available, we will place you in your alternate choice of courses. You will receive confirmation of your courses and the corresponding syllabi prior to departure.

  • What if I have other questions?

Having questions is normal. If at any time you have questions about any aspect of the program, please feel free to contact us by calling (504) 280-7345, emailing [email protected], or stopping by LSU New Orleans International Center, Room 124.
