College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP)
The College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP) serves to engage undergraduate students in the College of Sciences in cutting-edge research, providing funding for laboratory supplies and student wages. Applicants must be an undergraduate in the College of Sciences to apply and positions are available across all seven departments. Students can work up to 10 hours per week, earning $15 per hour. COSURP awards allow for up to 100 paid hours of scholarly work in the spring semester and another 100 hours in the fall. Departments may also offer course credit for independent research depending on the department requirements.
COSURP seeks to enrich LSU New Orleans undergraduate experience by:
- Increasing the interaction between undergraduate students and faculty/graduate students.
- Building lasting bonds through group educational opportunities and social activities.
- Providing insight into careers in the sciences.
This program is not intended for only our best students but also those students at risk of leaving LSU New Orleans. We especially encourage freshmen and sophomores to apply and also women and minority students. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] for more information.
The COSURP awards are part of the Tolmas Scholars. Students who receive awards are expected to present their research at InnovateUNO. More information, including eligibility requirements, list of faculty mentors, and how to apply, is available here.

The College of Sciences seeks funding to expand our undergraduate research program with a focus on engaging and supporting high potential, academically at-risk students in meaningful research in the early stages of their undergraduate careers at LSU New Orleans.

UMass Chan Medical School Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The UMass Chan Medical School Summer Undergraduate Research Program is an intensive and structured summer research experience. Therefore, students who are genuinely interested in research and are likely to pursue research later in their careers, irrespective of the terminal degree they pursue, are the best fit for the program. During the summer, students engage in an intensive 10-week research project supervised by a UMass Chan faculty member. The students attend a series of research lectures given by UMass Chan faculty and participate in several career development and networking sessions. Students additionally participate in a series of weekly small group sessions during which they are instructed in many of the intricacies of written and oral scientific communication. Senior postdoctoral fellows or junior faculty members lead these sessions. The end result of these sessions is the creation of a poster describing the student’s summer research, which is presented at a scientific session open to the entire UMass Chan community. Several past participants have subsequently presented their posters at national scientific meetings and won awards for their posters. We encourage applications from students with interest or experience in research as a long-term career goal.
Students selected into the program receive a $6000 stipend, travel to/from UMass Chan, housing, daily transportation to campus from the residential dorms, and other program costs (Total award of around $8500).
Requirements:
- LSU New Orleans students must first submit an internal application to the College of Sciences. After our review of LSU New Orleans applications, we will ask 2 - 4 students to apply directly to the UMass Chan program, and up to 2 LSU New Orleans students will be accepted into the program after review by UMass Chan.
- Availability to attend the 2026 summer program from May 24 – July 31, 2026.
- Graduating seniors are not eligible (May 2026 graduates).
- Applicants must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher and be in good academic standing.
- Eligibility for the program is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents.
- Students cannot receive funds from any other federal source (e.g., NIH) during the program.
- Proof of health insurance coverage is required prior to acceptance into the program.
Application deadline: Internal applications to the College of Sciences are due by Monday, February 23, 2026. Students selected to move onto the next application phase will be notified and will then need to complete the UMass Chan application no later than Monday, March 2, 2026. This includes submission of all supporting documents.
