Purpose

The Student Care Network provides early intervention for students who may be struggling, in distress, or whose behavior poses a disruption to the campus community.
We review confidential reports, develop support plans, and connect students with resources to promote wellbeing and success. Our work is grounded in compassion, collaboration, and compliance with University policy.

Student Care Network Flowchart (Download here)

This document is a flowchart titled “Student Care Network”, outlining a step-by-step process to assess student behavior and determine whether to refer a student to the Student Care Network at LSU New Orleans. The chart includes five decision points and a summary of actions. Step 1: Is Immediate Action Needed? Questions to ask: Is the student a threat to self or others? Are they breaking laws, damaging property, or using drugs/alcohol in a concerning way? → If YES, call 911 or Public Safety/UNOPD at 504-280-6666, then refer to the Student Care Network for follow-up. → If NO, continue to Step 2. Step 2: Is this a Policy Violation? Question to ask: Does the behavior violate institutional policy? → If YES, consult your dean or submit a report to Student Conduct at uno.guardianconduct.com/incident-reporting/new. Student Conduct will refer to the Student Care Network if needed. → If NO, continue to Step 3. Step 3: Is this Disruptive or Noncompliant? Question to ask: Is the behavior disruptive to the learning/living/work environment or defiant toward university staff? → If YES, submit a Student Care Network referral. → If NO, continue to Step 4. Step 4: Is this a Mental or Emotional Health Concern? Question to ask: Does the student seem mentally unwell, unusually distressed, or “not like themself”? → If YES, consult Counseling Services at 504-280-6683 or submit a referral to the Student Care Network. → If NO, continue to Step 5. Step 5: Is there a Notable Drop in Motivation? Question to ask: Is the student withdrawing, using substances more, or reporting emotional struggles? → If YES, submit a referral to the Student Care Network. → If NO, assess if your department can support the student directly. What the Student Care Network Does: Gathers information, reviews reports, and develops student support plans Coordinates with campus partners for follow-up Documents the situation and actions taken Does not directly handle classroom discipline, Title IX, or conduct cases General Guidance: Assist students in identifying unmet needs Refer to campus or community resources as appropriate Intervene consistent with university policy Submit referrals via uno.guardianconduct.com/incident-reporting/new

  • What happens after I submit a report?

Once your report is submitted, a member of the Student Care Network will review it to assess the student’s needs and any potential risk. The team may gather additional information, consult with campus partners, and develop a support plan tailored to the student’s situation. You may be contacted for follow-up or clarification if needed. The goal is always to connect the student with the right resources and promote their wellbeing and success.

  • What if it’s an emergency?

If someone is in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, call 911 or LSU New Orleans Police at 504-280-6666.

The Student Care Network is not an emergency response team, but we can provide important follow-up support after the situation is stabilized.

  • Can students self-refer?

Yes! Students are welcome to refer themselves if they’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with personal or academic challenges, or unsure where to turn. The Student Care Network is here to help you find support and navigate difficult circumstances. You don’t have to be in crisis to ask for help.

  • Can I report anonymously?

Yes, you may submit a report without identifying yourself. However, anonymous reports may limit the team’s ability to follow up or gather additional information. When possible, we encourage you to include your name so we can contact you if clarification is needed.

  • Is my report confidential?

Reports are handled with care and shared only with those who need to know in order to support the student and uphold University policies. The information you share will be kept private to the extent possible, but absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed—especially if there are safety concerns.

The team will use discretion and good judgment in how information is shared. In some cases, the student may be able to infer the source based on context, but we do not automatically share the name of the reporting party unless it’s necessary to ensure safety or compliance.

If you're unsure what to share, you can contact us first to talk it through at [email protected].

  • What kinds of behaviors should I report?

You can report any behavior that feels concerning, disruptive, or “not quite right.” Examples include:

    • Noticeable changes in mood, appearance, or participation

    • Expressions of hopelessness, distress, or withdrawal

    • Disruptive or aggressive behavior toward others

    • Signs of substance misuse

    • Difficulty coping with a personal or academic issue

    • Concerns shared by the student about their own wellbeing

You don’t need to determine whether something is serious enough—if you're unsure, it's okay to submit a report or consult with a member of the team.

  • What if I’m not sure whether this is a Student Care issue, a conduct issue, or something else?

If you’re unsure, go ahead and submit the report. The Student Care Network works closely with Student Conduct, Counseling Services, Accessibility Services, and other campus offices. We’ll make sure the concern reaches the appropriate team. You can also review this flowchart to help guide your decision.
