With four research institutes—Greater New Orleans Center for Information Assurance (GNOCIA), Canizaro Livingston Center for Environmental Informatics (GulfSCEI), Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI), and Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences (PIES)—faculty in COS conduct cross-disciplinary, cutting-edge research across LSU New Orleans and with external partners. The College occupies 75,000 square feet of dedicated research space, including wet and dry laboratories, state-of-the-art computer labs, and hands-on teaching facilities. Learning and tutoring centers in each department provide dedicated space for peer-to-peer tutoring and group projects.

Don’t just study science. Experience it.

In the College of Sciences, we empower our students to design their own path to success. With active learning approaches, ample opportunities for hands-on and applied learning, and chances to engage with other students and the community, our students are trained in academic scholarship and real-world skills to be the scientific leaders of tomorrow.

About the College of Sciences

As one of the largest colleges at LSU New Orleans, the College of Sciences (COS) offers diverse paths of study spanning the scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer science. earth and environmental sciences, mathematics, physics, and psychology. Its seven departments and four research institutes partner with industry and government to conduct cutting edge research, expand the frontiers of knowledge, and fuel scientific and business growth. Students work side-by-side with distinguished faculty; through small class sizes and a student-centered approach to learning, we foster an enriching and supportive academic community. With occupations in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines estimated to grow 1.7 times faster than non-STEM fields, graduates of COS are trained in both academic scholarship and real-world skills to be the scientific leaders of tomorrow.

Opportunities

Twenty student organizations offer ample opportunity for students to get involved, develop leadership skills, and attend professional and networking events. We know that learning does not just take place in the classroom and experiential learning is highly encouraged through the College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP), AMRI Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, and classes that provide course credit for participation in research projects. Many faculty also offer paid and volunteer research positions to work alongside them and graduate students in their laboratories or in the field. Students are able to apply their skills in real-world applications through internships such as the GE Software Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SWEAP). Opportunities are also available to earn course credits for interning with local companies and organizations.

Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation

The primary objective of the Louis-Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-LAMP) program is to provide minority STEM students with educational enrichment e.g., peer tutoring, summer research opportunities, conference participation, and modest financial support via book awards, GRE preparation books, and summer tuition assistance. Students participate in K-12 and peer tutoring activities. LAMP is funded by NSF and Board of Regents. At LSU New Orleans, this program has existed since 1995 and is led by Dr. Puri. Participants come from nearly all STEM disciplines.

College of Sciences Scholarships

The College of Sciences offers scholarships under three main categories, each with its own application. Most scholarships are awarded based on financial need and we strongly encourage all students to have a completed FAFSA. Our scholarships have limited funding and are competitive; meeting the base qualifications does not guarantee an award. Many of our scholarships require students be enrolled at full-time status (minimum 12 credit hours) and remain in good standing for the award period. Recipients of scholarships may be required to acknowledge their award by writing a letter of thanks to the donor. Some scholarships are targeted to first-generation college students, meaning neither custodial parent or legal guardian has earned a college degree.

The application period opens annually in late Spring with scholarships awarded for the following Fall semester. We highly recommend students give considerable thought to the questions in the applications and write a draft for any requiring short answers before submitting the completed application.

Many of our scholarships are generously supported by alumni and friends of the College of Sciences. We are truly grateful for their dedication to our mission and for the meaningful role they play in helping our students reach their academic goals.

HealthCare Mentoring Scholarship

This scholarship is part of a grant awarded through the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, targeted to undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor of sciences degree and with a declared interest in a career in healthcare. Recipients will receive $2000/semester towards costs of attendance for Fall and Spring ($4000 total/academic year), attend professional and career development workshops, and must serve as a peer mentor to 1-3 incoming students interested in healthcare. To be eligible, students must be a first-generation college student (i.e., neither parent or legal guardian has completed a college degree) and be enrolled in a 4-year degree and a sub-plan with a healthcare focus (Pre-Medical; Pre-Dental; Pre-Veterinary; Pre-Occupational Therapy; Pre-Optometry; Pre-Physical Therapy; and Pre-Physician Assistant). This scholarship can be retained as long as certain requirements are met and students remain in good standing.

Amato STEM Scholars

Scholarship for undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Sciences or the Robert A. Savoie College of Engineering, majoring in a STEM field. Award amounts may vary by recipient, and covers the costs of tuition, books, and fees until graduation. Preference will be given to candidates who are anticipated upon graduation to contribute to the Greater New Orleans community. Selected candidates will exhibit high motivation to succeed and display determination necessary for achieving such success. Recipients must be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) for Fall and Spring semesters, and remain in good standing during the period of award or not be eligible for future awards.

James Russell Theriot Scholarship

Scholarship to specifically support the educational needs of an undergraduate male student in the field of science. Up to 2 scholarships may be awarded annually, based on students’ financial need as well as demonstration of perseverance and strong desire to succeed. Selected students will receive full in-state tuition and fees. Recipients must remain in good standing during the period of the award and be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) each semester.

Science Scholarships

The College of Sciences has a number of endowed scholarships available to students, ranging from $500 - $1500. These scholarships must be used to cover cost of attendance such as tuition, books, and fees. In addition to donor-specific eligibility criteria for each award, the College is looking to help students with strong interests in sciences pursuing research experiences or other extracurricular activities, and to help students with financial need.

Students who want to be considered for any of the scholarships listed below, apply through this one application.
